¡Por favor! Ayude a proteger el árbol de La Ceiba de Vieques firmando nuestra petición. Llego la hora de aprobar la “Ley de la Reserva Natural Parque La Ceiba de Vieques”, P. del S. 1366.
A lo largo de los últimos cuatro siglos, la Ceiba de Vieques “el árbol de la vida” ha perdurado como un pilar de la herencia Viequense y un testigo de la historia de nuestra isla nena y su gente. En su copa ella abraza los espíritus de los Taíno, y en sus raíces ella declara la permanencia de nuestra gente, para anclarnos al pasado, presente, y futuro de nuestra comunidad. La Ceiba ha presenciado el dominio colonial español, las operaciones de la Marina de los Estados Unidos y el huracán María. Al sobrevivir estos retos, las raíces firmes y enormes que emanan de su tronco personifican la fuerza y resistencia de los Viequenses, y las flores que ella produce irradian con la esencia de esperanza y la vida nueva.
La Reserva Natural Parque de la Ceiba de Vieques salvaguarda no solo la Ceiba, sino que los manglares, humedales, áreas de anidación de tortugas verdes, Manatees, estuarios, y playas. Estos hábitats amparan la biodiversidad rica de la isla, incluyendo algunas especies en peligro de extinción, como los pelícanos pardos y las tortugas verdes, manatíes antillano la misión de la reserva es proteger y compartir estos tesoros ecológicos y culturales con la comunidad Viequense.
La Ceiba Community Project está trabajando para adquirir protección de los niveles del estado y mejorar la infraestructura de la reserva para preservarla para las generaciones futuras. La ley que se ha escrito expandirá los bordes de la reserva para abarcar los hábitats marinos adyacentes, que incluyen hierbas marinas y sistemas de arrecifes de coral. Estos hábitats, amenazados por el cambio climático, son claves para preservar la biodiversidad increíble de Vieques. Además, estamos buscando fondos para mejorar y expandir los senderos naturales, renovar el patio de recreo que fue dañado en tormentas, pavimentar el estacionamiento, e instalar un anfiteatro y pabellón. Estas mejoras son esenciales para asegurar que la reserva obtenga protección legal duradera y que sea accesible a la comunidad local, Puerto Rico y el mundo entero.
El valor de estos tesoros ecológicos alcanza más allá de los límites de nuestra reserva, preservando elementos cruciales a la herencia boricua y apoyando la salud del medioambiente a escala global. Su apoyo hoy nos ayudará a honrar el legado de la Ceiba; a compartir su historia, proteger la biodiversidad de sistemas ecológicos que ella sostiene y empoderar a la comunidad de reunirse y escribir nuevas historias con ella.

Please help protect La Ceiba tree of Vieques by signing our petition. It’s time to approve “Ley de la Reserva Natural Parque La Ceiba de Vieques”, P. del S. 1366.
Over the last four centuries, the Ceiba Tree of Vieques, the “Tree of Life,” has endured as a pillar of Viequense heritage and a witness to the history of our island and its people. In her branches (copa) she bears the spirits of the Indigenous Taíno, and in her roots (raíces) the declaration of our people’s permanence, anchoring us to our community’s past, present, and future. The Ceiba having borne witness to Spanish colonial rule, U.S. Navy operations and Hurricane María. In surviving these trials the steady roots that emanate many meters high from her trunk, embody Viequenses strength and resistance and the flowers she produces radiate with the essence of hope and new life.
La Reserva Natural Parque de la Ceiba de Vieques safeguards not only the Ceiba tree, but also the surrounding mangroves, wetlands, green turtle nesting areas, estuaries, and beaches. These lush habitats harbor the island's rich biodiversity, including several endangered species, such Brown Pelicans, Manatees and Green Sea Turtles. The reserve’s mission is to protect and share these ecological and cultural treasures with the Vieques community.
La Ceiba Community Project is working to gain state protection for the reserve and to improve the reserve’s infrastructure, preserving it for generations to come. The bill we have composed would expand the borders of the reserve to encompass the adjacent marine habitat, which hosts vibrant seagrass and coral reef systems. These habitats, under threat from climate change are key to supporting the incredible biodiversity Vieques has to offer. Furthermore, we are seeking funds to improve and expand the nature trails, refurbish the playground damaged by storms, pave the parking lot, and install an amphitheater and pavilion. These improvements are imperative to ensuring that the reserve obtains enduring legal protection and that it is accessible to the local community, Puerto Rico and the whole world.
The value of these ecological treasures extends beyond the borders of our reserve, preserving key elements of Puerto Rican heritage and supporting the health of the environment on a global scale. Your support will help us honor the Ceiba’s legacy by sharing her history, protecting the myriad of ecological systems she supports, and enabling community members to come together and write new stories with her.
